A Slip of Her Own: Beginning Sewing Course: In Person Class at Minx February 20, 21, 22
-If you’ve never sewn before but want to,
-If you’ve only cussed at a sewing machine and made a dish towel,
-If you have a sewing machine in a dusty box and last touched it in 1989 with your gran,
-If you think about dabbling with sewing and get intimidated, come on down, trust me, we’ve got you, this class is for you.
We created this class to empower, release the grudge we can hold about our bodies, and get creative.
In this class we’ll learn a bit about patterns and sizing (& why sizing for women is a total set up, and how to change our relationship with that).
We’ll learn a bit about how to release shame around the body, and to just go for it and start to sew for empowerment, joy, and as an artistic expression.
We start on Friday night at 6:30, February 20th, in the gorgeous upstairs atelier space with a talk about clothes and the body from world renowned teacher & designer, Sarahbeth Larrimore.
Walk downstairs to the store for apero of bubblies and small bites. Meet the incredible women of Minx and your fellow classmates.
Saturday & Sunday we begin at 9:30, we’ll break for an hour lunch -you’re encouraged to bring a lunch for yourself and -if you’d like- something to share. We resume class at 1 pm and go till about 4:30 both days.
You will receive a beautiful kit to keep of: linen/cotton slip fabric, pattern, spool of thread, seam ripper, gorgeous silk trims, hand sewing needles, booklet, and tape measure.
All machines have their own quirk, so if you already have one, please bring it so that you deepen your comfort level with what you have at home. Otherwise machines will be provided.
Basic pattern theory, adaptation, and tailoring will be explored. We’ll talk a little about botanical dying, natural alchemy and more.
This class is the first time world renouned teacher, Sarahbeth Larrimore will be teaching in her home town.
(& I can’t wait!)
“People ask me when and how I learned to sew.
Honestly? As a teenager at night so that my gran wouldn’t know and squeeze the desire & creativity right out of me with her “right ways” of doing things. I don’t know the proper ways, I just know my own. But perfect seams, fancy machine attachments and “proper training” -aren’t what got me into international creative magazines or in Vogue, the heart of what I create and the way pieces celebrate the person wearing them are what sing out. Giving it a try with a seam ripper in one paw, and tenacity and a wild courage in the other, lead you to where you want to go. Perfection is dull. Come with me on the adventure of celebrating yourself.” -Sb
