Frequently Asked Questions

I’ve never sewn, can I take this course?

Yes, BUT! The prerequisite is a willingness to try. This isn’t a learn-to-sew course, it is a design and beginning pattern drafting & draping course. While sewing is simple this course might overwhelm you if you’ve never turned on a sewing machine or wound a bobbin before. Garment sewing is truly simple: forwards, backward, & a zig-zag stitch pretty much do it all.

Pattern making stems from the 3 to 4 body block master patterns we’ll make in this course. You can make those in a short amount of time and then the world is your proverbial oyster in creating patterns for garments. And I created this course with the beginner in mind.

You can spend as much time as you need on each segment and get support as you need it in our monthly check in opportunities.

Fancy embellishments, and other techniques that you may want to learn can take a minute to conquer, but those are leveling up your game after you’ve learned the basics and can create clothing that you love and that fits.

AND if you’re looking for a simpler less intensive start, the Queen Robe Project was created as an intuitive, empowering beginning designing & sewing adventure.

How long will it take me to complete the course?

It’s all relative to the time you want to spend on it. The framework I provide will serve you for a lifetime of creative work. As you can read from the testimonials, the design framework can be applied to most every aspect of artistic endeavors you may have. The pattern drafting and draping segments are both worthy of a university semester of study each, but most designers that went to university for their craft will tell you that you get out of that what you put in. I myself and still referencing my notes and workbook from courses 20 years later.

One student went through the entire course step by step and completed the course in 4 months. She enthusiastically dedicated her nights and weekends allowing things to marinate and ideas to bubble up during the weekdays.

There is a roadmap for your journey found on the internal menu page with approximate times. For body blocks, I approximate around an hour for each section of a body block so 1 hour for the front torso block, 1 hour for the back torso block, 1 hour for the arm block, and so on.

We don’t know where the muse might lead us, so a year feels like a leisurely amount of time to let the muse lead you down several pig trails and goat tracks in pursuit of a rich artistic life.

I have a very different style from yours and I’m worried I won’t like the design style you teach?

Hi there! Yes! I get it! Don’t worry, I teach you how to uncover your personal inspiration and how to follow your own path. I have a background in costume design and that background teaches folks how to find, follow, and appreciate various design styles and stories. The most important step is to stay true to what lights you up, and we’ll follow that light all the way home to our own personal wardrobe whether that is an art deco cabinet, a sprawling french chateau wardrobe, or a sleek modern set of custom built-ins, this course is about what speaks to YOU.

Why should I take this course?

Do you feel it calling you? So many of my most incredible teachers I’ve finally taken the leap to learn from -I’ve had that almost annoying niggling to keep looking into what they do or what they’re sharing or what they’re saying. If I’m honest sometimes -and most especially with the more expensive offerings I’ve even thought: they can’t really be worth it & I’m sure I know most of it. Each time I've been so glad I took the chance, quieted the nay sayer, the defensive voice, and opened up to the opportunity to learn more.

Specifically why this course? Why me for a teacher? Because as an indie-designing-one-woman-show, I’ve mastered each segment. Everything started from designing a vision but then I had to master how to turn those dreams into actual garments. So I did. I learned the math and formula of custom body block building, pattern drafting, draping, fit techniques, sewing, finishing, embellishment techniques and so much more. I didn’t hand it off to any masters, I became the master I needed. And because treating others with dignity and a livable wage is the decent thing to do - I spent my time trying to source the fairest traded fabric. Because how we treat our environment matters for our health and longevity, and the world, I took the time to source organic and sustainable fabric. Which meant learning about fiber history and how each type of fiber was made into fabric. So I share this knowledge with you too.

I think if you’ve been longing to learn just one or two of the skills I’m teaching, this course is going to unlock a creative waterfall for you because each segment tumbles into the next naturally. Take this course because it calls to you. That’s the best gauge - your own intuition.

I’m overwhelmed with finding my personal inspirations.

That’s ok. It’s totally normal. I think we’ve spent so much time being told what we should like and what should inspire us, sometimes it can be hard to hear our voice.

There is also SO MUCH out there! It can be overwhelming to hone in. There is a bonus class, Hone Your Vision: Magical Inspiration Boards made specifically for you that is included.
