I shared a little ditty about a conversation I had with my dad yesterday on facebook. Just a bit of why he called and what was said about NC’s proposed Amendment 1. And I can’t tell you what happened -the response was overwhelming. I don’t know exactly except to say, I shared the better parts of humanity. I’ve been more eloquent. God knows I’ve waxed on at length. But I think maybe it’s just the simpler truth of what it is to be human. And to love one another. Regardless.

This is what was said. By all means – pass it on:

It’s a hard monday. And then my dad called. And I thought I’d share. Because we’re all a little sad at the state of things. My daddy is one large republican cowboy. I’ll say it again: Republican Cowboy. He didn’t spare the rod, or go easy on most anything. He always said he loved us enough to teach us right versus wrong. Including that faggots weren’t friends. And then I grew up to be one. Today he called me for the 3rd day in a row. And he finally got to his point. “So sis, what’s this thing about amendments?” And I talked at him. And he listened. And then he said, “Just tell me- how to vote to take care of you.” And I said, well that vote hasn’t come around yet. But if you’d vote No then I’ll at least not have more of my few rights eroded. He said Ok. He said he loved me. About 6 times. He is different. Change happens folks. One person at a time.

Dad & me at my wedding celebration to my lovely wife.

And his toast. He said 3 words: “To Unconditional Love.”

I wrote a post about civil rights issues last June when NY passed their marriage equality law. You can read that post here: http://unabashedapparel.com/2011/06/28/rights-unchained/

painting of the milky way by Miguel Cartagena. Look it up. It’s a really amazing piece – full of epic Inca myth.

I was given an assignment. Write out your wildest most abundant business dreams. Wildest? Most abundant? What?

It was a good assignment. I’m not sure I accomplished it well. My virgoan nature won’t let me let go and just dream large – too much. I’ve trained myself to think of success differently. Maybe I’m too old to just think of having a plethora of worker bees to help me. That’s a lot of pressure when you aren’t the only thing depending on your success.

I relearned that I need space. Would I have more success if I learned to give myself that space without guilt? Also – I plan to work my arse off for a real long time. Real long.

And I learned I have a driving need to create. In many forms. So I’ll be going to the ceramic studio a little later in the morning. I also realized that I am in the end, an old school designer. I have ideas for clothes, shoes, cups, plates, curtains, baseboards (did she just say baseboards? – yes.) If I had 300 more years I’d want to put my grubby little paws on it all.

For me it takes a lot of time to learn a trade and then be able to allow room for my own creative process to imprint its style on that trade. It takes a while for things not to look clumsy. Old school. Years learning how to grow, card, comb, spin, dye and weave a fiber. Years. I would have been a great 18th century apprentice.

In my wildest dreams I have a star factory. And we grow clothes that wrap around you and teach you how to be bold & courageous & compassionate.

for so long I’ve wanted to stamp it. my look – on everything. yes. stamp stamp. create create. but i’m like a crazed squirrel running willy nilly after too many nuts showered from the heavens, or an oak tree…

what? -you say.      oh you know exactly. -I say.

half stamp – look to the left, carve stamp more, look to the right, carve something different.

A little J bird said, Sabelle, that’s what they call me. Okay that’s what one person calls me & I like it so I’m going to use it This Is My Story, back to the point. J bird says, Sabelle, you’re Creativity from The Book of Qualities* and I said, surely not! Too big of a compliment. J bird – yes yes! but you are see?

And she’s right  – I love all the colors. I love rococo art ladies with all their ruffles and flounces – for shame. I love modern Japanese design. nothing. bare. And I love a deep drink of red velvet. and I love unbleached muslin. I love dark detritus and curling and secretive and I love light so bright it hurts your eyes with dust flecks floating honestly.

right this second I’m quite happy I gobble up all of it. Yes. Gobble.

Range I’ll be calling it. Like all the colors and all their palettes on a wheel.

*The Book of Qualities = the best book ever. My all time favorite. Chances are you’ve received it from me if you’ve known me for just 1/2 a min.

I’m so busy – it’s working out. Keeping my eye flitting with purpose to The Next Thing. Such fun things are percolating.

I’m having the pleasure of working with the talented Kyra Dosch-Klemer once more (whoop whoop!). Kyra always asks these questions that get my intense heart fluttering a mile a minute.

We’ve been talking good design recently. A little known secret – I love me some modern spartan design. Yes. With no frills. No fruff. Gracia trys to beat this out of me, but it creeps back in the guise of “early primitive antiques”.  And the quote of all design quotes – “Simplicity is the highest form of sophistication” (-Mr. Da Vinci). It’s about guts really. If you wear, make, live with just barely enough – then all your bones, intentions, and talent show don’t they? Or the lack of good bones, purpose or any talent… yepper. Simple means courage in my little corner of the design world.

So this fella, Christian Jackson,  -he combined fairy-tales and damn good simple design. Whoa. Heaven for me.

    And my favorite:

    Yes indeed. Brilliance.
