Gracia and I discussed marriage whilst grating megahuge late summer zucchinis last year. We talked about all that we both wanted in that ritual of a ceremony. And we came down to some basics. (She decided all large conversations should be held over some kind of food preparing monotony to keep me on topic).
Driving to NY with our best good friend as photographer in tow (you’ll be noticing that we have a lot of best good friends) we realized a few other things a. getting to marriage site on time is less important than 7am coffee. b. I planned to dance in my favorite field and I wanted music. We bought a couple of songs on the good ole iphone as we entered the valley of spotty-mobilephone-reception. If it didn’t work – I was absolutely gonna hum. Humming is a tradition in my family. Which is good – because I hummed all the way up the mountainside in my beat up cowgirl boots – through mud and rock and raging river – calming myself as we went. I was humming The Weepies “twilight” and that was just fine – we got there under a waxing moon and a lavender sky. We hiked out in the dark – through trees and streams with the best good friend/photographer saying – I got nothing – don’t get mud on your dress – we’ll take pictures tomorrow. Which turned out better –
Our weddin’ reads like a southern coon dog ballad – complete with another best good friend on a greyhound bus (was it a greyhound Jean? Can I say it was – you know I like my bits elaborated…) traveling to camp in the woods with a beautiful surprise. Now you realize that we rented a car – drove 13 hours to camp -as in -in tents, then to drive to NYC and send best good friend #1 on a plane with camping gear & wedding clothes back to NC whilst we flew to Scotland and Ireland? Oh you didn’t know that bit? Well yes – also – we planned to get courthouse papers filed on the Monday we all flew to our respective places – but, as it turns out, Monday was Columbus Day. No courthouse. Now that’s another story – complete with best good friends #2, fairys, angels, and one raucous righteous judge I will forever be grateful to & we all say in chorus, “Thank you MissHonorableJudgeMam”.
(You are all skimming this for pictures – don’t think I don’t know it.) Well – as it turned out – Greyhound Bus Best Good Friend – arrived with some of the most lovely flowers I’ve ever seen. Yes. I had not a thing to do with it – JeanQueen appeared with The Illustrious Jack and they commissioned a flower installation from the ever-perfect Kyoko. So I had enchanting flowers and Gracia had 2 boutonnieres – and I didn’t have to fret or knaw at my fingernails about making a choice. Kyoko made all the right ones for me. And we had a whole ‘nother lovely day to take photos and be pretty with flowers and have friends walking with us – making us laugh – and we had our ceremony alone under the twilight moon and first evening stars and yes, friends, it was perfect.
As for photos -I can’t stress how important it is to be comfortable with your photographer. Thank you Apple – the photos, and you, are treasured. Starting today with the field dance – which was actually the last thing we did on photo + hiking day. I tied my dress in a knot and kicked off my shoes – and we boogied (and the iphone worked):
NOOO! MORE NOW!!! 🙂 I can’t get enough details and have been trying not to badger you! But seriously, the bit you’ve shared sounds (and looks) amazing.
Also? Gracia is brilliant: “She decided all large conversations should be held over some kind of food preparing monotony to keep me on topic”
So glad you found her. xoxo
<3 how perfectly beautiful!
