I have some of the best guy friends a gal could ask for. From philosophers to heli-jumpers, to photographers & woodworkers, I have a treasure trove of bros.
And they ask me all the time when I’m going to start sewing up bits for them & I tell ’em: “If y’all weren’t so damn cheap – well then I’d make clothes for you.”
Boys -this one here is for you.
Sometimes I want to be a boy just to show ’em how it’s done. There are some simple ideas (I hate the word rules) that would make your average guy one dapper looking gent, or cowboy, or rugged sexy man with maybe a scottish accent (I can’t help you there sadly). Women are all the time getting spiffy (and grooming far too much and putting on waaay too much perfume) but men often look sloppy.
Boys – listen up: Linen shirts. Rolled up shirt sleeves. A well fitted vest. Dark denim. A good pair of: boots, lace up shoes like oxfords or lace up shorter boots. A great hat. 2 great ties. Yes, I said ties – wear them loose. Make sure they are less wall street and more rogue. A tweedish jacket that fits – it can be a bit threadbare, or a bit beat around the edges. Sweaters – that’s a whole chapter – more on that later. Suspenders. Let me say it again. Suspenders.
And whilst I’ve had this post on pause – waiting to finish it up – it looks like Toast has an intuitive mind and published a lookbook following my prescription:

Suspenders – preferably button on – not the clips.

And if I was a boy – I’d have a couple of tattoos with my suspenders – no clue why, I just would.
And as to the The Hat – it doesn’t have to be a panama hat or a wide brimmed fedora – it could be a pageboy cap – it could be some banged up and well loved cowboy thing. It just has to fit your person well.
And the man has a manpurse too. Just a thought.
While these photos are mostly of very fit men – most all this garb looks amazing on many male body types (and some female too for that matter).
Also – note that Goodwill is a friend that has many of these items for a song.
Love this post so very manys!
